Caps & Jones Mix For XMU
This mix is/was a classic. I use it as a warm-up just about every time I DJ out in the boonies (which I guess isn't much, but still...) XMU is?/was the indie-oriented station in the satellite radio roster, and Gavin, host of their dance music show which I believe is/was called Indeed, invited C&J to contribute a mix to be played over the air. CAPS AND JONES IN SPACE! (Correctly) assuming that every other DJ asked to participate, not to mention the show's format, would lean heavily on a la mode acts like Justice, Spankrock, Vitalic, et al we morphed into our Dizzy and Daffy Dean personae and threw them this classic rock curveball. With the exception of the set-ender, no one with a sense of rhythm would deny that these are very much Dance Songs, but I don't think it's at all what we were expected to deliver. We were just as proud of that fact as we were of the mix itself, which is full of improbably awesome transitions and underappreciated songs that either had been or would become C&J live staples.
My mom had satellite radio in her car, and on the afternoon this was set to originally air we drove around all afternoon running errands and waiting for our mix to start. She took a picture of the radio display with her camera phone. We were bummed to hear that they did not play the intro we'd recorded at Gavin's request, either because it was too goofy, because it had music under it (R.I.P. Jack Rose,) or because Caps shouts out the wrong name of the radio show towards the end. If my memory serves me well, this was recorded while C&J were living together in Philadelphia on a rainy Fourth of July when we could have been at a free Hall And Oates concert but instead were in Will's top floor bedroom getting drunk in the afternoon with Mike Famous. God bless America. Mike Famous is also visible in the accompanying image, selected purely because it looks as fun as this mix, along with long-time friends and C&J boosters E-Rock, Big Kimble, Nappy, Rut-Roh, Mike 40oz, and Mike Robot.
