Pandemonium Jones - Splendid Moments 2008
Some of my favorite songs of MMVIII mixed and blended at the behest of the good folk at Rock The Dub, "the least jiggy and most no frills" outpost in the blogosphere. Very much of a theme, Mike Famous says this tape sounds like "a year in the mountains," which is essentially what it is. Some of these jams held me down during what I called The Great American Roadtrip, which was supposed to be a circuit of the country but, like so many myths, ended in California.
I got to LA in March, then spent time in San Francisco and Arcata before I went to work on an organic farm in the Sierra Nevada from June through October. I stayed on as the caretaker over the winter, in a big cabin above an apple orchard, chopping wood and trying to get some of the music I slept on during the farm season. I made the mix over a snowy weekend, playing around with songs in Serato on Saturday and lining out the whole mix on paper before throwing it together in Ableton on Sunday. Good wood stove music, for sure, and also the first mix I've worked on that received the complement - from two different people, no less - that it's a good sexual soundtrack. Just sayin...
