Caps & Jones - Smoky Shuffle

Will and I were dance party DJs but neither of us ever really kept strict tabs on "dance music," the stuff they sell on import 12"s and feature nightly at clubs in cities worldwide where the druggy-eyed and sharply dressed congregate. We never dove into house, disco, techno, baltimore club or any of the other gen(r)e pools of 130 bpm floor fillers, but we hung around on the decks long enough to scoop out a few quality tidbits that bubbled up. We'd usually weave them in with half-time hip-hop and 80s jams when we spun live, rarely playing more than four or five in a row and never from the same genre. Eventually Ready For The World found its way in.

Smoky Shuffle was an attempt to capture some of that 2 am energy for posterity. From rap to rave metal in well under an hour, it's an exercise in simulated spontaneity that, with the exception of the booty bass double header in the middle, jumps genres every song without losing its juju. Not as charming, perhaps, as Lyssnar, it's nevertheless a pretty accurate slice of Caps and Jones party life. Bonus points: the title is derived from a misspelled Simpsons quote and the "cover" was drawn by the talented Simpsons connoisseur Serafina Engfer, who is now Will's wife. Aww hell, I wrote all this malarkey but the file's a dud. Use your imagination for now, I guess.
